美国的法学院提供的法律硕士学位，时长一般为9-12个月。实际上来说，LLM是面向外国法律本科的学生和外国律师所设，美国本土基本没有人会去攻读。LLM在美国大部分州是不能考律师资格考试的。
LLM有两种类型：一种是普遍型LLM课程，这类学位的课程会给予你充分的自由来撰写有关法律的论文，更多地面向国际学生。另一种是专门性LLM课程，提供专项性法律研究与学习，例如知识产权、环境法、国际法等等。
