他全靠他的功绩才达到今天的地位。      --完全的/透明轻薄的 (全凭功绩)

优点长处： The committees are looking at the merits and demerits of the proposal.
委员会正在评判该提议的优缺点。

Merit还有动词的意思，同学们知道吗？？？------【v.】值得、应获得：I think the suggestion merits consideration. 我认为这个建议值得考虑。
